Self Assessment Deadline: What If I Miss the Deadline?
The Self Assessment tax return deadline is one of the most critical dates for UK taxpayers. Missing it can result in fines, penalties, and unnecessary stress. This guide covers everything you need to know about the deadlines, penalties, and ways to avoid last-minute tax worries.
When is the Self Assessment Deadline?
The deadline to submit your online Self Assessment tax return and pay any tax due is midnight on January 31st each year.
If you’re filing a paper return, HMRC must receive it by October 31st. Missing these deadlines can result in penalties, even if you have no tax to pay.
Pro Tip:
File early to avoid last-minute stress and unexpected issues. Our Self Assessment service takes the hassle out of tax returns.
How Much is the Fine if I Miss the Self Assessment Filing Deadline?
If you miss the deadline, HMRC will automatically apply a fixed penalty of £100.
Beyond this, additional penalties apply:
- Over 3 months late: £10 per day for up to 90 days (max £900).
- Over 6 months late: £300 or 5% of the tax due (whichever is higher).
- Over 12 months late: A further £300 or 5% of the tax due.
For cases where tax is deliberately withheld, HMRC can apply even higher penalties.
Can I Still Submit a Paper Self Assessment?
Yes, but the deadline for paper returns is three months earlier, on October 31st. If you miss this, you’ll need to file online to avoid penalties.
Additional Fines for Late Payment
Missing the January 31st payment deadline can lead to further penalties:
- 30 days late: 5% of the unpaid tax.
- 6 months late: Another 5% of the outstanding tax.
- 12 months late: An additional 5% of the outstanding tax.
These penalties stack up quickly, making it essential to pay on time.
You can Estimate your penalty for late Self Assessment tax returns and payments on HMRCs website here.
Upcoming Changes in Penalties (April 2026)
From April 2026, HMRC is also introducing a new points-based penalty regime for non-compliance with the new MTD for ITSA rules:
- One penalty point per missed deadline.
- When points reach a threshold, a £200 penalty applies.
- Further late submissions incur additional £200 penalties.
Thresholds will vary based on how frequently you file.
Don’t Get Caught Out by Payment on Account
If you earn most of your income through Self Assessment, Payment on Account may apply. This means you may have to pay 50% of next year’s tax bill upfront, causing an unexpected expense if you’re unaware.
Can I Escape a Self Assessment Fine?
HMRC may waive penalties if you have a reasonable excuse, such as:
- A close family bereavement just before the deadline.
- Serious illness or hospitalisation.
- IT issues preventing submission.
- HMRC’s online services being unavailable.
If you want to appeal a penalty, complete an SA370 form or appeal online.
